A shorter version of this article is also published by the Financial Times. For mine the most exciting Meursault wines show a delicacy, transparency, weightlessness with tension while still have a depth and length of flavour to match their standing in the hierarchy from Bourgogne to 1er Cru. Coche-Dury’s only Grand Cru wine is the Corton-Charlemagne, but a handful of the domaine’s other wines are of particular importance. Premier Cru wines from Meursault’s Les Charmes and Les Perrieres vineyards are among the most expensive wines from the Cote de Beaune, and the Coche-Dury Meursault is among the most popular. Low volatility equates to higher price stability, meaning less risk and therefore a better score.

Domaine Coche-Dury produces a range of white wines, including village-level, premier cru, and grand cru bottlings.
While my tasting at the domaine was postponed by France's second COVID-19 lockdown, I sacrificed a bottle from my cellar to take a first look at Raphaël Coche's 2018 Meursault Village. The wine is very promising indeed, unwinding  in the glass with aromas of struck match, crisp orchard fruit and citrus oil, complemented by subtle hints of praline and sesame. Medium to full-bodied, with impressive cut and tension in this often rather open-knit vintage, it's elegantly textural and nicely concentrated, with tangy acids and a youthfully chalky finish.

They are intense, incredibly refined,  and are insanely well balanced. The wines offer up an improbable combination of depth, verve, and power. Founded by Jean-François Coche, the domaine has garnered an almost mythical reputation.
And nowadays, after some unfortunate experience, we wine writers are no longer allowed to taste wines from barrel. For Jean-François Coche the 20-mile trip north to the Château du Clos de Vougeot for one of the fancy Chevaliers du Tastevin dinners where I shared a table with him once was a major outing. Not for the Coches winemaker dinners around the globe. They prefer to stay within spitting distance of their barrels – only a modest proportion of which are new.
Domaine Coche-Dury is a legendary estate in Burgundy, France, renowned for its exceptional white wines, particularly Chardonnay. The domaine is located in the village of Meursault in the Côte de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy. Les Chevalieres lies just above the village of Meursault where the slope follows at the same altitude as the premier cru’s just a little further south. Chevalieres adjoins Les Luchets which is positioned against the top part of this lieu-dit.

These wines are known for their ability to age gracefully, gaining complexity and depth over time. While they make some  red wines from Pinot Noir, the house is famous for its highly collectible white wines made from Chardonnay. In fact, Coche-Dury’s Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru wine is consistently ranked among the top 100 most expensive wines. The 2015 vintage from Coche-Dury stands out for its exceptional quality and vibrant character, largely attributed to the meticulous craftsmanship that defines this esteemed winery. This particular year was marked by a favorable growing season in Burgundy, which allowed for the optimal development of flavors and aromas in the grapes. The result is a wine that not only reflects the terroir but also the skillful techniques employed during its production. The hard Comblanchian limestone which disappears deep underground around Nuits-Saint-Georges reappears here where, as one moves southward, red wines give way to whites.
