If you’re staying in Kingscote, you don’t necessarily need a car. However, most people come by car and I would highly recommend either renting one or coming with your own. It just gives you so much more freedom and opportunity to explore everything Kangaroo Island has to offer. When you’re in Kingscote, you’ll have plenty of options to explore the island or have some fun closer to town. Heading over to the Kangaroo Island Visitor Center is a great day trip because many of the island tours start from there.
Relax inside by the fire or on the deck overlooking spectacular views of Lathami Conservation Park watching the wildlife go about their daily routines. Several charming spaces to dine in/outdoors, or relax by the wood fire. Well-positioned to explore iconic attractions like accommodation kangaroo island Snelling Beach, the Enchanted Fig Tree, Stokes Bay, Cape Borda, Ravine des Casoars, Flinders Chase, Remarkable Rocks, and Admiral's Arch.

There are no amenities in the grounds, but toilets, BBQ facilities, and a picnic area are available roughly 400m away. Roughly 30 minutes from Penneshaw, American River Caravan Park is one of Kangaroo Island’s best caravan parks. It can accommodate up to 15 campervans in powered sites and works on a first-come, first-served basis, so you can’t book a spot in advance. Showers are available for $2 per 5 minutes, as well as drinking water, BBQ facilities, and beach access. This caravan park offers powered and unpowered sites and is the only 4-star luxury self-contained accommodation on the western side of Kangaroo  Island.
It’s the biggest and most developed town on the island, which makes it super convenient for newcomers. On top of that, it’s located near the airport, so getting there is a breeze. And lastly, if you’re looking for the ultimate beach vacation with the best beaches on Kangaroo Island, Emu Bay is the place to be. Rates apply per suite, per night for a maximum of two guests. There are  big french windows in the living room that open on to the deck. This is a good choice for families as there are bunk beds in one of the bedrooms. It’s also worth noting that there are 2 bathrooms and a separate toilet which is convenient for large groups.
Extreme adventures are never far on Kangaroo Island, from quad biking through native bushland to riding  fat-tyre bikes down sand dunes. There are also over 20 hikes on the island that cater to all skill levels, ranging from 30-minute journeys to five-day treks. Conveniently situated at Kingscote, these cabins are only 2 kilometres from the town jetty and main street. These fully self contained one and two  bedroom cabins are often surrounded by wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, birds and peacocks. Linen and towels are included, as well as cooking facilities, laundry facilities and several barbecues.

It’s located on the eastern side of the island and  is technically not the best base for a road trip however, there are a couple of scenarios in which you would want to choose to stay in Penneshaw. The kitchen is fully equipped so you can easily cook all your meals here. You’ll find a large dining table in the kitchen and on the deck. The Oyster Farm Shop in American River is one of the best seafood shacks you will find in Australia.
